Homework Policy
The studies do show that homework will help connect the home with the school and teach both responsibility and organizational skills. Homework is best assigned when it has meaning and purpose. It should support and expand the skills and concepts that are presented and should be supplemental to what has gone on in the classroom that day. It may be something we were unable to finish at school because of lack of time or materials. When homework is assigned it should be turned in by the due date. Something we expect fifth graders to do almost every night is read, read, read! Your child should be reading a variety of materials on a regular basis.
Since you are the first and most important teacher in your child’s life, the best homework is the time you spend with your child reading, answering and posing questions, and investigating areas and concepts that will generate a sense of purpose and value.
Unless it’s an extended absence, we usually do not provide homework ahead of time (in the case of vacations, etc.).
